Meet Laurie Roderick, Staff Engineer and Senior Engineering Manager at Samsung Electronics America. Recently, Laurie utilized Samsung’s legal benefits program to help her family complete a process that may be unfamiliar to some: second-parent adoption. “While non-birthing parents in same-sex couples are often listed on birth certificates as my wife and I are for both our children, many of us choose to take the additional step of formal adoption. This helps ensure that the non-birthing parent is recognized as a legal parent, especially in cases where the birth certificates alone may not provide sufficient legal protection.” Through this program, Laurie and her wife were able to complete and legally obtain this type of parental adoption of their children with minimal financial cost. “Family is built on love, but ensuring its legal recognition and protection is just as crucial. We were happy that we signed up for the legal benefit program. The lawyer we found helped guide us through this process rather seamlessly.” Her advice to those navigating similar paths? “Explore the resources at your disposal, including your company’s legal benefits, your community’s resources, local legal services and beyond. Earlier this year Samsung pledged $1 Million in product donations for LA wildfire relief. This week’s story of impact takes us back to the Golden State to see how one of our partners, Team Rubicon, is using Samsung tech for wildfire relief efforts. Efforts that continue long after the flames are out. In the wake of devastating Los Angeles wildfires, Samsung partnered with Team Rubicon, a veteran-led organization that deploys trained volunteers, known as Greyshirts, to serve their communities before, during and after natural disasters and humanitarian crises. To support rebuild efforts, we equipped LA’s Team Rubicon with advanced communication devices to ensure seamless coordination in the field. Through our donation of Galaxy tablets, Team Rubicon launched a powerful new operational management app that’s transforming the way they serve.
